3 DAYS OF SUMMER SKILLS

Last week, we ran a three-day programme for 13 young people, focused on building confidence and preparing them for education, work and life in the UK.

We kicked things off with icebreakers and games and from there, participants took part in confidence-building exercises like practising conversations at different levels of confidence, a sales pitch challenge with random objects, and a group activity called "This Is My Story," which mixed public speaking and acting.

Over the following days, we brought in some brilliant partners to share practical skills and support. Raina from Breadwinners ran a CV-writing workshop and introduced her organisation's wider programme. Joana from Refugee Education UK spoke about access to education. We also learned about Change Please, who offer work-training placements as well as health and mental health support, delivered from their own buses. Volunteers from London Youth, Infosys and CVC supported throughout.

Our Chair of Trustees, Wendy, led a session on building LinkedIn profiles and using them effectively, and Massi ran more confidence-building and communication games with the group. The programme closed with an inspiring Q&A featuring two of our Youth Board members, Florjan and Frank, who shared their own journeys through education, volunteering and work since arriving in the UK, and their experiences with Compass.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the three days happen. To our facilitators, trustees, volunteers, and partner organisations. It was a brilliant example of what's possible and how much we can learn when a community comes together to support young people!

When I came here, I didn’t have many friends, experiences or knowledge but now I’ve got everything, friends, experience, know how to do a CV and LinkedIn, and I know now many different things, and a lot of games!
